Spanish One

Welcome to Spanish One!!!

At Mercy Spanish One is for those students who have had no Spanish in grade school or, at best, limited Spanish. We advise students from "established" programs to enroll in Spanish Two. We do not give an entrance exam. Our staff is able to recognize a misplaced student almost immediately and place her in an appropriate class. One advantage of entering the second year while a Freshman is that the student has the option of enrolling in college level AP Spanish Five as a Senior.

What can you do at home to give yourself "a boot up"? Pronunciation! Pronunciation! Pronunciation! If we were building a house, Spanish One would be leveling the ground and laying the concrete foundation. As the year comes to a close we would be erecting the wooden framework. If our pronunciation isn't authentic, doesn't accurately emulate the sounds of Spanish vowels and consonants the concrete will crack and parts will begin to sink. From that point on, whatever we design and install on the framework is in danger of collasping. And pronunciation is simply listening and repeating. And you can do that at home.

Utilizing this website on a consistent basis will help you, even if you are an experienced Spanish speaker:

As you enter the site, look at the black horizontal bar. Click on
PRONUNCIATION. The second screen will have a maroon vertical bar that is numbered. Simply click on each of the numbered sections;there are fifty or more numbers. As that screen pops up, note the following: it looks like a big white index card. Above the card is text in English about each sound. Centered below the card is the number of cards to click through. Be sure your volume is turned up so that you can hear clearly. Click continue until your have listened to each card.Listening to and repeating each of these a number of times will make the first week or two of Spanish One much easier.
